Johannes Jakob Buxtorf

Johannes Jakob Buxtorf

Basel 1645 - 1705

He succeeded his father as chair of Hebrew in Basel (1664). In 1665, he left the city and travelled around Europe. He returned to Basel in 1669, and he resumed his teaching activity and worked as a librarian. After his death, the precious library – which includes works bought by Johannes I, Johannes II, and Johannes Jakob – was sold for 1,000 thalers to the public library of Basel.
