Christian Gottlob Heyne

Chemnitz 1729 - Göttingen 1812


German philologist, librarian and translator. In 1763 he became full professor in Göttingen, in the chair formerly held by J. M. Gesner. He was known for his tireless political writing: he wrote nearly 8,000 reviews which were published in the Gottingische gelehrten Anzeigen.

Main works: Allgemeine Weltgeschichte von der Schöpfung an bis auf gegenwärtige Zeit, 17 Bde. (in 50 Teilbde.) (Leipzig 1765-1808); P. Virgilii Maronis Opera, 2 vol., (Lipsiae 1779); Opuscula academica, 6 Bde. (Gottingae 1785-1812); Pindari Carmina, 3 vol. (Gottingae 1798-1799).
