Paul Oskar Kristeller

Berlin 1905 - New York 1999

After completing his university studies in Heidelberg in 1928, he undertook postgraduate studies in Berlin and Freiburg, and then was the German language lecturer at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. He was forced to leave this position in 1939 with the passage of the anti-Semitic racial laws in 1939. He took refuge in the United States, where he taught at the University of Yale and Columbia University in New York until 1973. His contributions to research on Humanism and the Renaissance are fundamental.

The library, donated by Kristeller, reached the Scuola Normale during the 1990s. It contains more than 7,300 pamphlets and extracts and about 2,500 volumes, which are only a part of the original library since a large portion was donated to the library of Columbia University. The volumes are shelved based on their subject in the various sectors of the Library of the Scuola Normale. The extracts are, instead, kept together. Most of the collection concerns the thought, culture and literature of the Humanistic-Renaissance period, as well as the history of art, Italian and European, with an important collection on the arts of the extreme orient.
