Christoph Martin Wieland

Oberholzheim 1733 - Weimar 1813

German poet, novelist and translator. Professor of philosophy in Erfurt from 1769, counsellor in the court of the Duke of Weimar from 1772 to 1798, he withdrew to Osmannstedt until 1803 and then returned to Weimar. Founded and edited the journal Der Teutsche Merkur (1773-89), later named Der neue Teutsche Merkur (1790-1810).

The sale catalogue, drawn up at the death of Wieland, contains 3,583 descriptions, numbered continuously and divided into nine sections of different topics: 1st section (nos. 1-124), 2nd section (nos. 125-574), 3rd section (nos. 575-1105), 4th section (nos. 1106-1200), 5th section (nos. 1201-1345) 6th section (nos. 1346-3138), 7th section (nos. 3139-3304), 8th section (nos. 3305-3355), 9th section (nos. 3356-3583). 271 descriptions of different topics follow, and –with separate numbering – 68 indications of engravings, portraits and other objects of the "Nachlaß" of Wieland.
The catalogue is prefixed, without page numbering, by a brief explanation of the sale of Wieland’s library and by a Preface (2 pp.) by Friedrich Justin Bertuch.
