The whole library of Renan was left to the Bibliotèque Nationale de France Département littérature et art. Rez-de-jardin, fonds Ernest Renan.

The catalogue, compiled in the years immediately following the death of Renan and published by Calmann Lévy, the publisher of the Oeuvres complètes, consists of 5561 headwords. The Avis indicates that «the library catalogue is divided into two parts. The first consists of the oriental biblical library» and it is closely related to the works of the author about «the exegesis, philology and history of oriental languages. This part represents the most complete collection. The second part represents the catalogue of the other volumes regarding history and general philology, classical studies, the Middle Ages, etc».
